What is an alkaline diet?

The basis of the alkaline (or alkaline) diet is the theory that the foods we eat affect the acid-base balance (pH) of the blood.

From the point of view of adherents of this nutrition system, as a result of digestion, the metabolic waste remains in the body (something that the body does not use for its own needs), which, depending on the products, maybe alkaline or acidic. The latter acidify the blood, and this has a negative effect on health: the cells lack oxygen and energy, the absorption of minerals worsens, the metabolism slows down, and an additional load falls on the kidneys. All this can lead to the development of diseases: arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer, the formation of hernias - and back problems.

It is not difficult to guess that, in the opinion of the adherents of the diet, alkaline foods help all of the above not to occur (and even relieve from serious diseases) and improve the functioning of the body as a whole. And at the same time contribute to weight loss. In essence, an alkaline diet is a bit like a detox.

What foods can and should not be on an alkaline diet?

The diet should consist of 80% of alkaline foods - that is, those that neutralize the acidification of the body and protect against the development of various diseases, and  20% of the acidic ones that are needed to maintain digestion.

Alkaline products:

1. Fruits: apples, bananas, berries, grapes, melons, citrus, peaches, pears, watermelon.

2. Vegetables: beets, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, spinach, onions, tomatoes, red peppers, cucumbers, zucchini.

3. Tofu, nuts, seeds.

4. Mushrooms

5. Legumes

6. Drinks: coconut and almond milk, tea, chicory.

7. Spices: cinnamon, curry, ginger, mustard, sea salt.

Acid Products:

1. Meat, fish, dairy products (based on cow's milk).

2. Eggs

3. Cereals, flour from them.

4. Sweet.

5. Alcohol.

6. Caffeine.

On an alkaline diet can you lose weight?

“Yes, you can. But the matter is not in the acid-base balance of blood, but in keeping to a diet, a person eliminates a large number of products and this leads to a decrease in the caloric content of the diet,” says Caroline Séderquist, a doctor. Another plus of the diet is a large number of fruits and vegetables, thanks to which the body regularly receives vitamins and minerals.

What is wrong with the alkaline diet?

1. She has no scientific basis.

Normal blood pH ranges from 7.35 to 7.45, and a large amount of alkaline foods does not affect these numbers. Our body maintains acid-base balance, regardless of what we eat, for a fairly simple reason: going beyond the norm in any direction is not compatible with life. Therefore, if something goes wrong, special systems of the body will be connected, the task of which is to keep the indicators within the specified limits.

2. With an alkaline diet, you can change the pH of urine, but no blood.

“These are two different things. In the urine - everything that the body does not need (in particular, excess acid is removed with it). Yes, the urine pH level depends on what you eat and drink, and if you exclude acidic foods, tests can show that the acidity level has decreased. But the pH level of the blood will not change and will still vary from 7.35 to 7.45,” says physician Craig Primack.

3. In the diet greatly reduced the number of protein products.

This is fraught with loss of muscle tissue, and in the worst case can lead to a deficiency of vitamin  B 12  and anemia.  

4. There is no scientific evidence that an alkaline diet helps in the treatment of cancer.

Adherents of the diet suggest that cancer cells multiply in an acidic environment and, if there are alkaline foods, cancer will not progress. However, the causal relationship is the opposite: the rapid growth of cancer cells creates an acidic environment, and not vice versa.

5. It is not proven that the alkaline diet is effective in fighting osteoporosis.

Followers of the diet believe that the body uses alkaline minerals to maintain blood pH, in particular, it takes calcium from the bones and thereby weakens them. But in this theory, an important detail is missed: the kidneys and lungs are primarily responsible for removing acids from the body and stabilizing the pH, and not bones at all.

In general, adhering to an alkaline diet for the sake of healing the body without a doctor's recommendation is quite a meaningless exercise. It is no coincidence that last year the diet ended up in the anti-rating of the  British Dietetic Association (British Dietetic Association, BDA). By the way, this year, alkaline water also received the same honor.
